208V 30 Amp Single Phase Electric “Pigtail” Hookup

One of the items the building owner normally provides if swing stage scaffolds are used, is power and the power connection. Exceptions to this will require the contractor to provide a generator. In most (almost all) cases the owner foregoes that complication and expense and provides the power. To do so, a “pigtail”, as pictured below, needs to be installed on the roof or the top floor for each scaffold.  Drawing from panels on the roof is usually much better than elsewhere because if power is drawn from lower floors doors have to be open and cables strung along floors and in stairways.

The owner, not the contractor, should be responsible for this since he owns the panel.

The image shows what’s typically needed for each scaffold (operated by two electric motors). It’s a twist lock, 208V, 30 amp, single phase electric hook-up via a NEMA 10-30R twist lock, 3 wire, 30 amp, 250 volt female receptacle on the roof. (The 20 amp receptacle looks almost the same but it won’t work. The 30 Amp prongs have to be forced into it.)
