Coatings for Finished Metals

Window and storefront frames, louvers and other architectural metals are usually beautiful when first installed. Since their surfaces are typically finished with durable materials (such as fluoropolymers) or treated via processes that have long lasting effects, like anodizing, they remain attractive for many years, but not necessarily forever. Eventually the elements take a toll, as seen on the images here. In many cases the damage is superficial and fairly easily corrected. Once restored, coatings can be applied to forestall recurrence of surface damage.

Solvent based resin for coating / restoring anodized aluminum finishes.

KBS Clear Diamond Finish

This moisture cure urethane is very durable and UV resistant but characteristic of clear coats it does not protect underlying surfaces from UV radiation. Using it as a coating on cleaned / restored architectural metals, which are UV resistant, is one of many applications for the product.

Presto Restoration Products, Metal Protector HD

This acrylic product, which drys to a semi-gloss finish, protects unfinished metal surfaces as well as finished surfaces such as custom color FEVE (fluoroethylene vinyl ether) coatings and PVDF (poly vinylidene fluoride) coatings.

System Specified for Restoring Kyner (PVDF) coated metal surfaces

A Sherwin-Williams technical representative provided the following system specification for restoring the surface of an aluminum clad building in Princeton, NJ. The building had been painted and that coating had failed. The Sherwin Williams rep called for removal of the existing failed coating “down to the existing Kynar finish”, and then application of one coat of “XIM UMA primer“, a Rust-Oleum product, followed by two coats of Sherwin Williams “DTM Acrylic Semi-Gloss”. (The Sherwin Williams primer is Sherwin Williams DTM bonding Primer. (It is a waterborne, acrylic emulsion, adhesion-promoting bonding primer. Designed to be part of a system for coating pre-finished metal siding (such as those containing Fluorocarbon [Kynar], Silicone Polyester, or Polyester Polymers), or other hard, slick, glossy surfaces, and previously painted surfaces. This product must be topcoated and it is suitable for use in USDA inspected facilities.)
