Colorless Coatings for Brick Masonry – Brick Industry Association Tech Note 6A

Although penetrating sealers and other coatings applied to clay brick can produce positive outcomes there are disadvantages and dangers that can accompany their use. This Brick Industry Association Technical Note discusses their benefits, possible detrimental effects, the types of colorless coatings available, performance criteria and properties, and information on how to apply them. For use on exterior walls water vapor transmission rate of the material is important. The acceptable criteria is a water vapor permeability of at least .98 as determined by ASTM E96.

Durable Waterproofing for Concrete Masonry Walls: Redundancy Required

Single wythe walls are inexpensive and their simplicity can mean that they lack features that act as drainage elements in other types of walls. This article offers standard solutions and information on tests that can determine if concrete masonry units (CMUs) in the wall are absorbing more water than they should.

Concrete Coatings, Sealers and Stains

Concrete is an extremely durable material and under many conditions it weathers quite well. For many reasons, such as the need to use de-icing chemicals, erosion resistance, asthetics, resistance to traffic and water repellency, to name a few, coatings, sealers and stains are called for. Manufacturers have responded to the market with myriad products that fall under numerous categories. The products, manufacturer’s and categories on this page are some of those that commercial building restorations consultants specify and contractors warranty.

Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation Evaluation of Concrete Deck and Crack Sealers

Of the thirteen penetrating sealers studied in 2005 to determine their effectiveness in sealing concrete for road surfaces two products, Sonneborn Penetrating Sealer 40 and Hydrozo Silane 40 surpassed the rest having the best performance and greatest depth of penetration, which was 3.1 mm for Sonneborn Penetrating Sealer 40 and 3.8 mm for Hydrozo Silane 40. Of the ten sealants tested in the study two were deemed best, Sikadur 55 SLV and Dural 335.

General Information

Choosing The Appropriate Repellent – Waterproofing Systems

This abuildersengineer.com article describes and compares both film-forming waterproofing materials and penetrating sealers. It also identifies the tests that can be carried out to verify that the selected material will perform as needed on the surface to which it is to be applied. The film forming sealers in thearticle are acrylics, silicones, silicone rubber and urethanes and the penetrating sealers are silanes and siloxanes.

Waterproofing with Silicon-Based Materials

Water-resistant, breathable coatings on porous surfaces are usually silicon-based. Siloxane, silane, and silicone rubber, are the most common varieties. They’re effective in part because of their ability to penetrate substrates without effecting porosity. These silicon-based materials share a number of characteristics, for example they don’t noticeably alter the appearance of most surfaces or the underlying material’s breathability. The distinctly different  attributes of siloxane, silane, and silicone rubber affect how they are manufactured and used.

Waterproofing Membranes

Barrett Company

Barrett’s products are representative of waterproofing solutions at the other end of the continuum that begins with penetrating sealers. Barrett’s membranes are heavy, rubber polymers and asphalt that, in some cases, are combined with felt to form systems that are used on roofs, walls and below grade.
